The Sydney University Surgical Society (SUSS) is proud to present Cardiothoracic Surgical Grand Rounds, presented by Dr Nikki Stamp.
Dr Nikki Stamp is a cardiothoracic surgeon. She has a strong background in transplant surgery, mechanical support and congenital cardiac disease. Clinically, Dr Stamp’s clinical interests include thoracic transplantation, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and blood conservation in cardiac surgery. She is also a strong advocate for women in surgery, participating in the #ILookLikeASurgeon campaign to encourage women into a career in surgery.
Dr Stamp will be talking about her career path as a female surgeon and presenting several interesting cases in cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr Thomas Hugh will discuss diseases commonly encountered as an upper GI surgeon and their operative management.
Dr Hugh is the Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital. His primary clinical interests are in the fields of hepatobiliary surgery, hernia repair, and complex laparoscopy. His primary research interests include clinical outcomes and quality of life following surgery for upper GI malignancies, as well as basic science research investigating molecular markers for prognosis in hepatobiliary tumours.

The Sydney University Surgical Society (SUSS) and Paediatric Society (SUPS) have come together to present the first “Paediatric Thoracoscopic Surgical Grand Rounds”.
Dr Jonathan Karpelowsky will discuss the thoracoscopic approach to paediatric surgery, which has become an increasingly common technique for lung resection, biopsy, and management of empyema, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, oesophageal atresia, pectus deformities, vascular abnormalities and pneumothorax.
Dr Jonathan Karpelowsky is a staff specialist in the Department of Paediatric Surgery at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He is a general surgeon, with sub-specialties in hepatobiliary and thoracic surgery.
This event will be particularly relevant to stage 1 students who will have completed their respiratory medicine block, but will be of interest to all students interested in paediatrics, surgery, or both!

This is a half-day high-yield overview of ear disease, presented by passionate teacher and ear, nose, sinus, and throat surgeon Dr Ronald Chin. Common presentations seen in the hospital and clinics will be discussed, and a problem solving-approach will be applied to help students (and future interns…) navigate the complexities of ENT.
This lecture series is tailored for Stage 3 students preparing for upcoming surgical exams and to Stage 1 and 2 students who wish to fill crucial gaps in knowledge. Topics have been selected directly from the ENT Surgery Core Curriculum, covering clinical issues from infections to foreign bodies to vertigo to ear emergencies. The lectures will be of significant benefit to students wanting to consolidate anatomical, physiological, and clinical teaching in preparation of the end of year barrier exams.
Dr Chin has compiled this lecture series in order to complement ENT teaching in the medical program. He draws on his extensive experience as an ENT Surgeon at Nepean Hospital and his subspecialty training in head and neck cancer.

This is a one-day intensive review of general surgery for final year medical students hosted by Dr. Gary Sharp, general surgery registrar. The program will include a comprehensive review of general surgery with focus on gastrointestinal surgical presentations and is tailored to final year medicine exams.
This session will be valuable for stage 3, years 3 and 4 written surgery exams and long cases. Junior students are also welcome, but stage 3 students will be given preference.

Sydney University Surgical Society is excited to host “Introduction to Surgery: SET and Beyond”.
Prof. Henry Pleass will discuss career pathways, the life of a surgeon & the future of surgery.
Prof. Pleass is an HPB surgeon at Westmead hospital and transplant surgeon at RPAH. He is Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney and the surgical head of The Australian National Pancreas Transplant Program at Westmead.
Dr. James Edelman (Cardiothoracic Surgery Registrar at RPAH) will provide insight into the logistics of surgical training in Australia, i.e. the Surgical Education & Training (SET) program.
Whether or not you’re interested in a career in surgery at this early stage, this lecture is a fantastic opportunity particularly for stage 1 and 2 medical students to gain insight into the surgical training process and surgery as a career.
