Notice is hereby given for the Annual General Meeting of the Sydney University Surgical Society which will be held on Tuesday 27th May at 6:00pm in Bosch Lecture Theatre 2, Bosch Building, the University of Sydney. The agenda will include:

All motions must be sent to the Society Secretary by 22nd May (Julian Smyth, jsmy5124@uni.sydney.edu.au). In the interests of time, only motions with notice will be considered at the meeting.

Elections
Nominations for positions will be taken from the floor only. Candidates must be nominated by a third party, have their nomination seconded by another third party, and accept their nomination. Positions include and will be voted on in the following order:
Executive positions
- President
- Vice President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
Committee positions
- Research and Communications Officer
- Skills Lab Coordinator
- Stage 1 Representative
- Stage 2 Representative
- 6 Clinical School Representatives: 1 for each of Concord, RPA, Nepean, Northern, SAN, and Westmead
Other items
Due to the constitutional voting and large number of elections not all council reports will be heard at the AGM.

The Royal Australian College of Surgeons is holding its annual essay competition for final year medical students.
The topic for the essay this year is “Are rural surgical services in danger of becoming extinct?”. The best essay will win a Medical Student Award of RACS and be published in the NSW Chairman’s Newsletter and the College website.

Sydney University Surgical Society are excited to host Endocrine Surgery Grand Rounds.
Prof Leigh Delbridge from RNSH will be presenting cases in endocrine surgery. Prof Delbridge has served many years as Head of Surgery at the University of Sydney and is an internationally recognised expert in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
This will be a great opportunity, particularly for stage 2 students in their endocrine block, to learn about the surgical management of common endocrine pathologies.
Students from all stages and clinical schools are welcome.

Sydney University Surgical Society are excited to host Practical Management of Orthopaedic Trauma.
This is the first session of a two-part series on orthopaedic surgery covering the surgical management of MSK pathology and is particularly relevant to first year students in their MSK block. The second session “Surgical Management of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumours” will be held in early June.
In this session, Dr. Sanjeev Gupta will be presenting orthopaedic trauma cases and outlining basic management principles. Dr. Gupta will focus on important approaches for interns and junior doctors.
All years are welcome.

SUSS is holding an intermediate surgical skills wet lab for Stage 2 and 3 students. Suturing will be practised on pork belly and taught by junior doctors from RPAH.
Please note that this is for students with prior experience suturing. The session will be expanding on simple interrupted and instrument tie techniques so students should be comfortable with these. Unfortunately we are only able to accommodate 30 students. Beginner students should sign up for an introductory skills session which are held throughout the year – keep an eye on the Facebook page for details.
This event is made possible by the help of Covidien, who are donating the sutures and pork belly.

We are going to run some introductory suturing and knot tying sessions for Med 1 and 2 students over the next 8 weeks (21 March to 9 May). These sessions will be held in the Blackburn Skills Lab (Room 318) at 0730 and will be directed at beginners who are interested in developing some basic skills.
Unfortunately all sessions are currently full – sorry to those who missed out!
